Project Info

The Location

Wales Millennium Centre is an iconic landmark in Cardiff and is the No1 visitor attraction in Wales. It is one of the UK’s top cultural attractions outside London, attracting over 1 million visitors every year. The building was constructed by Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd and the founding patron is Sir Donald Gordon. Planning started in 1984 and the grand opening by Queen Elizabeth II was held in 2004.

The building was part of the Cardiff Bay regeneration programme and the design began with an architect’s brief to create a centre Unmistakably Welsh and Internationally Outstanding. Wales’ identity is conveyed through the use of materials in the construction, locally sourced Steel, Glass, Wood and Slate. It is home to the Welsh National Opera and used for filming shows by the BBC such as Gavin & Stacey and Dr Who.

The centre links the waterfront with Cardiff city centre and hosts a variety of Tours and Shows as well as Exhibitions, Workshops, Talks etc. and regularly attracts the best artists and productions from across the world, at the same time, showcasing and developing local talent.

Our Task: removal of existing monolith poster signs then erect, install and commission two new 65″ Double Sided Digital Outdoor Totems to allow quick and easy updating of eye catching and dynamic content.

Detailed Project Description

David Bonney, Building Conservation and Engineering Manager, Wales Millennium Centre, explained: “We had identified that there was a need to replace the existing advertising signs. So the project comprised the removal of existing monolith poster signs then erect, install, and commission new 65″ Double Sided Digital Outdoor Totem Signs.

Previously we had internally illuminated paper poster units. They were size A0, Double-sided monoliths standing 3.2 metre high. We had all the usual poster problems that are associated with short print runs, causing time delays and expense for updating. Further problems such as corrosion within the monolith structure due to our coastal location and the prevailing wind damage.”

The Project Management

Explaining how the project was managed, David said: “A team was assembled to manage the project, they included representatives from various areas of expertise; Project Manager, Electrical Contractor, Civil Contractor, ICT staff, Metal Fabricator, and the centre’s Marketing Team“. Regarding the processes of Procurement, David continued, “It is a policy of Wales Millennium Centre’s to implement internal purchasing procedures. Collaboration on major projects requires Due Diligence and the use of Preferred Suppliers and Manufacturers“, and of Digital Media Systems, “Their experience in all aspects of Digital Signage was crucial as well as organising vendor assessment and the pre-delivery inspection at the factory in Slovenia, plus advising us on all the options available for the final build.”

The Benefits

When Avtar Singh MD of Digital Media Systems asked David “What benefits did you foresee the project would deliver” he responded: “Content can be designed and updated by our in-house Marketing Team. It can then be networked internally to the Digital Screens so providing easy content change in a short time. Added interest will lead to an increase in Sales as well as creating future Advertising potential.”

The Deciding Factors

David explained how the team at Wales Millennium Centre came to their choice as to which equipment they were going to purchase for their project, as well as the company they would choose as their system provider: “We made the decision to purchase the iMotion signage from Digital Media Systems as they met all of the requirements in terms of both our Specifications and of course – our Budget.
Digital Media Systems looked at all of our criteria and then provided us with a solution, in terms of cost, support and specification. They made sure we understood all the details at every stage and provided advice as the project evolved through much iteration.
We made changes as we progressed our understanding and then adjusted the specifications accordingly. The overall process was not interrupted by these changes, as we had started the project well in advance of its projected delivery.”

The Delivery

David continued: “The project delivery was absolutely precise, in terms of cost, timing and hassle-free installation. The finished signs are far more impressive than any brochure photographs. The advice given was honest and un-biased. We found Digital Media Systems very easy to deal with and they were very professional throughout the whole of the project lifecycle. We would certainly use their services again in the future. Digital Media Systems are now an approved supplier to Wales Millennium Centre and we are proud to be associated with their business.”

The Support

3 Year Technical Support plus a 3 Year Warranty ensure peace of mind for the client.
squareVIEW support service incorporates remote access for maintenance of the control systems. Heating and Air Conditioning systems are regularly serviced to ensure efficient operation, and ensure extended operation lifetimes.
